CPOE Market to be driven by call for adoption of IT by the WHO

CPOE (Computerized Provider Order Entry), as the name suggests, lets pharmacists, nurses, therapists, and physicians to order as well as process medications, lab tests, clinical procedures, and various other services electronically. The good news is that routing of these vital requests regarding patient care takes place on instantaneous counts. As such, through CPOE, the provider could enter orders from any of the locations (mobile or fixed) and access the patient’s case history as well. These orders accelerate efficiency on the part of the process of care on the whole.

CPOE helps in aversion of therapeutic duplications, harmful drug interactions, and reduction of inappropriate dosages. Transcription errors could also be minimized. Governments across the globe are also coming up with regulations for deploying CPOE systems, thereby going for integrating IT with the healthcare industry. At the same time, high costs of installation as well as implementation are restraining the CPOE market. This scenario is likely to be observed in the low-income countries of LATAM and MEA.

By geography, it’s North America holding the largest market share with healthcare being the top priority in the US. Europe and the Asia-Pacific stand second and third respectively. The Asia-Pacific is expected to stand out with digitization taking over almost every sector, with healthcare being no exception. Amongst the end-users like physicians, ambulatory centres, hospitals, and emergency healthcare services, the hospitals hold the major market share. As far as components are concerned, amongst software, services, and hardware, services dominate the market.

The companies dealing with CPOE include Siemens Healthcare, Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, Inc., Eclipsys Corp., McKesson Corporation, IDX Systems Corp., and GE Healthcare. Allscripts has its point-of-care prescription solutions doing the rounds. This has come in collaboration with NantHealth, thereby enriching the portfolio with respect to CPOE systems. Also, WHO, during the 58th World Health Assembly, did urge member states to take strategic steps for promoting IT, inclusive of CPOE. The players have been indigenously following them since then.
